Subjective random discounting and intertemporal choice

چکیده
This paper provides an axiomatic foundation for a particular type of preference shock model, called the random discounting representation, where a decision maker believes that her discount factors change randomly over time. For this purpose, we formulate an infinite horizon extension of Dekel, Lipman, and Rustichini (2001), and identify the behavior that reduces all the subjective uncertainties to those about future discount factors. We show uniqueness of subjective belief about discount factors. Moreover, a behavioral comparison about preference for flexibility characterizes the condition that one’s subjective belief second-order stochastically dominates the other’s. Finally, the resulting model is applied to a consumption-saving model and to an optimal stopping problem.

Intertemporal Choice as Discounted Value Accumulation
Two separate cognitive processes are involved in choosing between rewards available at different points in time. The first is temporal discounting, which consists of combining information about the size and delay of prospective rewards to represent subjective values. The second involves a comparison of available rewards to enable an eventual choice on the basis of these subjective values. While...
متن کاملRandom Intertemporal Choice
We provide a theory of random intertemporal choice. Choice is random due to unobserved heterogeneity in discounting from the perspective of a modeler. First, we show that the modeler can identify the distribution of discount rates uniquely from random choice. We then provide axiomatic characterizations of random discounting utility models, including exponential and quasi-hyperbolic discounting ...
متن کاملCongruence of BOLD response across intertemporal choice conditions: fictive and real money gains and losses.
Intertemporal choice is predicated on the valuation of commodities with respect to delay until their receipt. Subjective value of a future outcome decreases, or is discounted, as a function of that delay (Bickel and Johnson, 2003). Although behavioral studies suggest no difference between the devaluation of real and fictive outcomes, no neuroimaging studies have investigated potential differenc...
متن کاملMonkeys Are More Patient in a Foraging Task than in a Standard Intertemporal Choice Task
Studies of animal impulsivity generally find steep subjective devaluation, or discounting, of delayed rewards - often on the order of a 50% reduction in value in a few seconds. Because such steep discounting is highly disfavored in evolutionary models of time preference, we hypothesize that discounting tasks provide a poor measure of animals' true time preferences. One prediction of this hypoth...
متن کاملRunning head: HEURISTICS EXPLAIN INTERTEMPORAL CHOICE 1 Money Earlier or Later? Simple Heuristics Explain Intertemporal Choices Better than Delay Discounting1
Heuristic models have been proposed for many domains of choice. We compare heuristic models of intertemporal choice, which can account for many of the known intertemporal choice anomalies, to discounting models. We conduct an out-of-sample, cross-validated comparison of intertemporal choice models. Heuristic models outperform traditional utility discounting models, including models of exponenti...
